Friends of Ridgeway Pine Relict Help Preserve this Unique State Natural Area for Now and for Generations to Come.
Volunteers preserve, protect, study and promote the unique ecosystem and biodiversity
of the 551 acre Ridgeway Pine Relict State Natural Area with the guidance of WI DNR.
A high priority is preserving this unique combination of Northern alpine flora and Southern native species.
We are collecting and sowing seed, burning brush piles, pulling Garlic mustard, and removing woody invasives.
But we also encourage public understanding and appreciation through opportunities for
citizen observation, slow walking, bird watching, hands-on preservation and oral history telling.
Ridges of tall pine relict are set in sandstone cliffs and rock walls that soar over wetlands, oak savannas and restored prairies.
Pine relict are descendants of pine forests that covered all of WI after the ice age.
Protected from prairie fires by unglaciated rocky terrain, these alpine communities
survived with both Northern and Southern plant species.
